Here he seems more like an ensemble member, and even if Gladiator II does not achieve instant classic status, Lucius' journey from family man to slave to gladiator seems to take place over months rather than the years that Maximus fought. It aims to be a historical epic, but it is still a beautifully made historical epic with a great ensemble cast and some amazing action scenes. The 150 minutes fly by, leaving the door open for a possible third film to conclude the great trilogy depicting the fall of the Roman Empire.
