The story opens in 2012 with Omaha-based single auto technician Dave Kroupa, who is eager to socialise following a split. He finds Liz Golyar on a dating app; she is a bowling enthusiast with a rebellious streak, as seen by video of her turning off security cameras. Concurrently, believing their partnership to be informal, Dave also becomes engaged with Cari Farver. Farver, though, exhibits strange behaviour. She sends Dave a constant barrage of menacing emails and texts. As the virtual abuse gets more intense, the screen fills with vulgarities and the soundtrack has digital faults. When Golyar’s house burns down for no apparent reason, things take a dark turn. Unsettling things start happening, but Farver doesn’t show up.
